High school football: North Webster gives new Head Coach Wilson first win

by Russell Hedges

Christopher Wilson got his first win as head coach at North Webster Friday night. Wilson’s Knights defeated North Caddo 14-6 in a hard-fought game in Vivian.

“It feels good because the kids have put the work in,” Wilson said. “I’m happy for them that they can reap that benefit of what we’ve been trying to preach to them on doing things the right way and being together as a team and how that pays off. And it’s gratifying for me that the kids were able to earn their first win in a game like that. They had to fight for everything and they made the decision to fight for each other. And they’re reaping the benefits of that.”

North Webster improved to 1-1.

All the scoring was done in the first half. Kemaurion Jefferson returned an interception for a touchdown and J’Kobe Lawson caught a TD pass from Christian Whitlock, who also kicked both extra points.

The Knights defense turned back one serious scoring threat in the second half. The Titans (1-1) had first-and-goal at the 1. A penalty backed them up and the Knights kept them out of the end zone.

“Defensively they killed it tonight,” Wilson said. “The defensive coordinator had a great plan and the boys played with their hair on fire all night. I gave them a challenge. If we’re going to win tonight it was going to be on the back of the defense. They took that challenge and they did a great job tonight.”

The North Webster offense is still a work in progress. Wilson likened himself to a “bad cook in the kitchen.”

“You know what the recipe should look like. You know what the main course looks like. But you can’t get the recipe down. That’s what we looked like on offense. We’ve got the right ingredients but we’re trying get that recipe right.”

The Knights will look to do that when they host Minden Friday night at home. The Crimson Tide (2-0) defeated Homer 39-20 Friday.
