A large crowd gathered at Eagle Park on Turner’s Pond on Saturday morning for the American Legion’s annual Changing of the Flags ceremony, an Independence Day tradition that honored military service while commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States.
The patriotic ceremony featured the presentation of a new Honor Wall plaque, a keynote address on the nation’s founding, the singing of the national anthem, and a memorial wreath presentation. A surprise flyover by Navy veteran and pilot Paul Palmer added a memorable touch to the morning. The flyover had been planned in advance but kept secret from attendees. Honor Wall recipient Dr. Richard Campbell later said he was among the few who knew about the surprise beforehand.
Mayor Nick Cox welcomed those in attendance and reflected on the significance of the holiday.
“I’m so proud to live in this country,” Cox said. “Patriotism has to be a priority or we lose everything.”
Minden Police Chief Jared McIver also addressed the crowd.
“I’m thankful for the freedoms we have today,” McIver said. “I hope we all can reflect on this day and appreciate what we have.”
Corey Moore, vice commander for American Legion Department of Louisiana Post 182, reminded attendees of the responsibility that accompanies freedom.
“I want to thank each of you for joining us as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our great nation,” Moore said. “As we enjoy this morning together, let us remember that freedom is never guaranteed. It is protected by citizens who are willing to stand up for one another and our great nation.”

The keynote address was delivered by Mike Dick, a history teacher, who traced the nation’s beginnings from the Mayflower Compact through the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence, and the drafting of the U.S. Constitution.
Dick explained how the American colonies grew increasingly dissatisfied under British rule because of taxation and trade restrictions.
“We weren’t being represented … so we revolt, and the American Revolution begins,” Dick said.
He described the determination of the colonists in challenging what was then one of the world’s most powerful military forces.
“They’re willing to go up against that because they want to fight for the freedoms they believe in,” Dick said.
Dick concluded by emphasizing the enduring strength of the Constitution and the role of citizens in preserving the nation.
“Everyone is a vital part of what happens in the United States, and you have a voice to make sure that we’re doing the right thing in the United States,” he said.
The ceremony also recognized Dr. Richard Campbell as the newest recipient of the Honor Wall plaque.

Event organizer Jerry Madden praised Campbell’s military service in Vietnam.
“This person served in Vietnam. He went there and came home and, from what we understand, he brought all of his men back,” Madden said. “This person deserves to be on our Honor Wall.”
Accepting the recognition, Campbell expressed his gratitude and humility.

“I’m more than honored to be the recipient of this award. I know that there’s a lot more deserving folks out there than I that probably should be receiving it, but I’m honored to be with the previous honorees. Know that I thank you very much,” Campbell said.
Madden concluded the presentation by directing the audience’s attention to the names displayed on the Honor Wall.
“Look at the names of the soldiers who said, ‘send me, and I’ll go.’ Richard is one of them,” Madden said.
Brooke Santelices, a sixth-grade student at Lakeside Jr./Sr. High School, performed the national anthem. Cindy Madden led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Tommy McMurray offered the opening and closing prayers. Bruce Miles, a veteran counselor at Overton Brooks VA Medical Center, presented the memorial wreath, and Mike Holomon of the First Baptist Church Orchestra performed Taps.
The annual ceremony brought together veterans, public officials, and community members to honor those who have served the nation while reflecting on the sacrifices that secured the freedoms celebrated each Independence Day.
