A Springhill man was arrested in connection to an October crash that killed a North Webster High School teacher.
Brynton Simmons, 47, of Springhill was arrested by Louisiana State Police Thursday on charges of vehicular homicide, DWI first offense, speeding and driving left of center.
The arrest comes after toxicology samples were analyzed and troopers reconstructed the Oct. 28 crash, which killed Kelly Birdwell, 46, of Plain Dealing. She taught 11th grade special education at North Webster and was a native of Springhill.
Troopers said the investigation revealed that Simmons’ vehicle was traveling eastbound at 70 mph in the westbound lane of Louisiana Highway 157, when it struck Birdwell’s vehicle, which was traveling westbound, head-on.
Troopers said Birdwell was traveling at 27 mph and attempting to brake before impact.
Simmons’ received moderate injuries in the crash and provided a blood specimen, which revealed he was impaired at the time of the crash, according to troopers.
