Celebration of Life Services for Bertha Lee Johnson will be held Saturday, September 7 at 12:00 P.M. at the St. Rest Baptist Church with Rev. Robby D. Williams, officiating.  Interment will follow at the Sheppard Street Cemetery. 

Bertha Lee Johnson was born to Willie Pearl Maxey and Sydney Jones on June 26, 1931 in Minden, Louisiana (Growing Valley).

Her first church was Bright Star Baptist Church in Growing Valley Community.

Bertha attended Webster Parish schools.  She enjoyed cooking and caring for children. Bertha also cooked at Jack and Jill’s Café and Thad’s Restaurant. Later she would baby-sit and clean many homes.

Bertha was married to A.G Green and to this union Adelle was born. She also later married John C. Cotton Sr.

Bertha later joined St. Rest Baptist Church to be near her only child, Adelle. There she was a member of the Rebecca Mission and Sunday School #4 until her health began to fail. Bertha loved Rev. Williams although she sometime called him Rev. Mister.

Bertha departed this earthly life on Monday, September 2.  She was precalled in death by her mother, Willie P. Maxey and father, Sydney Johnson.  

She leaves to cherish her memories her daughter, Adelle Baker (Marshall) of Minden, Louisiana; two  granddaughters, LaShanna Hawkins (Alfonzo) of Farmers Branch, Texas and Tamara Baker of Minden Louisiana; three great grandsons, Nicholas Hawkins of Denton, TX, Jordan Hawkins of Farmers Branch, Texas and Jayden Baker of Minden Louisiana; Fayrine Kennon-Gilbert, who was like a granddaughter; a special friend who she thought of as a daughter, Shirley Carter and a host of relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held Friday, September 6th in the chapel of Kennon’s Mortuary from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.   Services are entrusted to Kennon’s Mortuary.  Email condolences may be sent to [email protected]
