Betty Shaw Benedict passed away March 17th in Ruston, Louisiana. Betty was the daughter of Keenie and Iva Lee Knighton Shaw of Taylor, Louisiana. A graduate of Gibsland High School, Betty played basketball for the Gibsland Lions and was All-State guard. A talented musician, Betty played the French horn in high school and college. She taught piano lessons while living in Minden and was the organist for several churches in Minden and Baton Rouge.
Betty relocated to Baton Rouge in 1977 and began her new life as a passionate LSU fan. She predicted a victory for LSU in all sports endeavors, especially football. An animal lover, Betty had many animal friends in her life, especially cats.
A gourmand, a stylish dresser, Betty enjoyed all things beautiful and was fastidious in keeping things tidy. She loved keeping up with politics and served as an election worker for many years in East Baton Rouge parish.
Our family owes special thanks to the friends Betty had in Baton Rouge. The kindnesses of Larry, Jane, Dennis and Nadia helped her stay in Baton Rouge for over twenty years. Tina Morrow was her wonderful friend and caregiver in Ruston. Betty is preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Keenie Lee Shaw, Alta Studds, and Drew Shaw. She is survived by her children Debra Benedict Venker ( Mike ) and Thomas Benedict ( Marsha) and two very loved grandchildren, Mike and Erin.
