BOWLING: Channell Earns C-USA Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship

by Minden Press-Herald

Louisiana Tech bowling’s Ashley Channell was selected as one of 14 recipients for the Conference USA Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship as announced by the league office on Wednesday.

Channell recently graduated from Louisiana Tech with a degree in pre-professional speech-language pathology and will be pursuing her master’s degree in speech-pathology. She posted a 3.59 cumulative GPA and has been named to the AD honor roll 12 times, the Dean’s List seven times, C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll four times, Southland Bowling League’s Academic Honor Roll three times and the President’s List twice.

The Morris Chapel, Tenn., was a four-year letterwinner at LA Tech and helped the Lady Techsters earn their highest ranking in program history as the Tech was ranked fifth in the National Tenpin Coaches Association February Poll. Louisiana Tech made its first national championship appearances at both the 2021 National Collegiate Women’s Bowling Championship and the Intercollegiate Team Championship (ITC). At the NCAA Tournament, Channell was a part of the Lady Techster lineup that registered the first perfect Baker game in program history.

As a senior in the 2020-21 season, Channell earned all-tournament honors at the Lady Techsters Invitational after finishing third individually with a pin average of 206.40. She led the team with 927 completed frames, 365 spares, 358 makeable spares and an overall fill percentage of 84.4.

The 13th annual award is named in honor of Dr. Jim Castañeda who served Rice for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in 2008. Every season, C-USA grants the $4,000 scholarship to distinguished graduates selected by the league’s Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.
