A woman who reportedly swiped a cellphone off the counter at a local department store has been arrested.

Minden Police arrested Nodkeshia Stephens, aka “Keshia,” 31, of the 2nd block of North Collins in Cullen, on a warrant for theft over $750. Bond was set at $10,000.

Police Chief Steve Cropper says they received a call Wednesday in reference to a stolen cellphone.

“The victim was at a local store and officers said she laid her cellphone on the counter at the service desk, accidentally forgot it and left it on the counter,” he said. “The next customer, identified as Stephens, walked up, showed her identification to cash a check, covered up the phone with an envelope and then took the phone.”

The chief says the entire incident was captured by surveillance video.

Officer First Class Chris Hammontree made contact with the cashier, obtained a copy of the check with Stephens’ driver’s license number written on it, he said.

The case was turned over to detectives and police obtained a warrant for her arrest. Det. Ryan Barnette contacted the Springhill Police Department, and she was taken into custody on the warrant.

The phone was valued at $849, with a phone case valued at about $100, he said, adding that the phone was only three weeks old.
