Cold, rainy weather slows Shop Small Saturday in Webster Parish

by Amber McDown

Cold temperatures and intermittent rain dampened turnout for Shop Small Saturday on November 29, but local shop owners said customers still braved the weather throughout the day.

The annual event, launched by American Express to highlight small businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, typically brings steady foot traffic to merchants across Webster Parish. This year, store owners in downtown Minden and surrounding communities reported lighter crowds as weather conditions brought below-average temperatures and bands of rain showers.

Despite the slower pace, shop owners said those who came out were intentional about supporting local businesses. Many businesses used the day to promote holiday gift items and encourage customers to shop locally through the season..

Local merchants said they hope improved weather will boost turnout for upcoming holiday events and weekend shopping.
