Commemorate Juneteenth with a day of freedom and festivities

by Amber McDown

On Saturday, June 17th from 10 AM until 4 PM, residents of Minden and surrounding communities are invited to gather on Martin Luther King Drive to celebrate Juneteenth, a day commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. The event, organized by local community groups, promises a day filled with history, entertainment, and activities for all ages.

Participants can expect a rich program of events, including educational displays on Juneteenth history, musical performances, and a tantalizing array of food vendors.

The festivities will also showcase a variety of pop-up shops, boasting a wide range of merchandise such as clothing, jewelry, and other unique items. Visitors will have the opportunity to support local artisans and small businesses while indulging in retail therapy.

“It’s not just for one part of the city,” said organizer Michael Walker. “It’s for the whole city of Minden, and we want everyone to come celebrate.”
