Discovery Camp kickoff events bring dinosaurs, hands-on learning to Webster Parish libraries

by Amber McDown

Families across Webster Parish stepped into a prehistoric adventure last week as Webster Parish Libraries launched Discovery Camp 2026: “Roar and Explore” with kickoff registration events in Springhill and Minden.

The first event was held May 20 at the Springhill branch for the northern branches, including Cotton Valley and Springhill. A second event followed May 21 at the Minden branch for the southern branches, including Doyline, Heflin, Minden, and Sibley.

Both events featured The Jurassic Experience, an Arkansas-based company that brought realistic, human-operated dinosaurs, interactive exhibits, fossils, and hands-on activities to local libraries.

Library branches were transformed with dinosaur-themed decorations and displays ahead of the events, welcoming children and families for an evening focused on exploration, science, reading, and creativity.

Webster Parish Libraries invited families to “step back in time” and experience “an unforgettable prehistoric adventure.”

Kim Sentell, director of marketing and community liaison for Webster Parish Libraries, said the annual program reflects the library system’s commitment to education and community engagement.

“Discovery Camp 2026 represents the heart of what Webster Parish Libraries strives to do every day — bring children, families, learning, and community together in a way that feels exciting, welcoming, and meaningful,” Sentell said. “Thanks to the thoughtful planning and dedication of Youth Services Coordinator Cassidy Duck, this year’s camp gives children across Webster Parish the opportunity to explore STEM, reading, creativity, and imagination through hands-on experiences designed to make learning come alive.”

Sentell said the program also highlights the role libraries play in supporting families and encouraging lifelong learning.

“On behalf of our Library Director, Savannah Jones, our staff, and everyone who helps make Discovery Camp possible, I can say that one of the most rewarding parts of this work is seeing our libraries become gathering places where children feel inspired, parents feel supported, and families create lasting memories together,” she said. “Discovery Camp is more than a summer program — it is an investment in curiosity, confidence, literacy, and the future of our community.”

Additional Discovery Camp activities are planned throughout June, including visits from LSU AgCenter’s Germ Cave exhibit, a hands-on tar pit rescue simulation, and an appearance by Steve’s Snaketuary, which will introduce participants to a variety of live reptiles and wildlife as part of the camp’s interactive educational programming.
