SIBLEY – The 22nd annual Don Stahl Memorial Tournament tips-off Wednesday, Nov. 18 at Lakeside.
Don Stahl was the legendary coach of Sibley High School, claiming 824 wins from 1975-1991. Stahl led Sibley to 100 consecutive wins from 1978-1980 and won two state championships.
Stahl passed away in the early 90s, prompting Lakeside to begin a tournament in his memory.
The tournament features both a boys and girls bracket with teams from Webster, Bossier, Claiborne, Caddo, Natchitoches and Morehouse Parish making the trip to Sibley to start the season.
Lakeside, Doyline, Minden, Haynesville, Bastrop, Evangel, Byrd and Haughton make up the boys bracket.
Lakeside, Doyline, Minden, Haynesville, North Webster, St. Mary’s, Evangel and Haughton will compete on the girls side.
“There should be some good, tough games,” Lakeside boys head coach Jason Gould said. “On the girls side, Minden has a chance to make a run. Coach Brown and his girls looked good the other night, but Evangel is the three-time defending champions.”
“On the boys side, Minden and Doyline ought to be a good Webster Parish matchup, then you’ve got Evangel and Byrd down their. Bastrop is a new team that’s in. There’s going to be some good competition and great games.”
Gould said the tournament will be played Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday due to the number of schools with teams in the football playoffs.
