WASHINGTON, D.C. –Congressman John Fleming, M.D. released the following statement after the U.S. agreed to a nuclear agreement with Iran:
“Today the Administration announced a nuclear deal with Iran, one of the most dangerous countries in the world and an exporter of state sponsored terrorism. Supporters of the deal are rejoicing that we will delay Iran’s nuclear ambitions for 10 years. Delaying a nuclear arms race for a mere decade, however, is not a reason to rejoice. I fear that the deal made concessions in every area necessary to prevent Iran from developing and detonating a nuclear weapon.
“I am also deeply concerned that Secretary Kerry agreed to lift ballistic missile restrictions in eight years, and opened the door to removing conventional arms sales within five years or less. Iran and its proxies like Hezbollah will train their new weapons on our ally Israel and eventually us. Secretary Kerry has failed the United States and Israel, and given Iran an incomprehensible win.
“The U.S. was too eager to strike a deal for its own praise. Despite the President’s veto threat, every detail of this agreement will be scrubbed by Congress. It is vitally important that this 100-page deal includes nothing less than the long-term safety of the U.S., Israel and our allies in the Middle East.”
Dr. John Fleming is Chairman of the Natural Resources Subcommittee on Water, Power and Oceans and is a member of the House Armed Services Committee. He is a physician and small business owner and represents the 4th Congressional District of Louisiana.
