Heflin Sawmill Festival kicks off Saturday

The Heflin Sawmill Festival will be start with a 5K Fun Run at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12.

There will be fun for all ages throughout the day, with vendors, arts and crafts, food, karaoke, 50/50 raffle and a $100 gift card raffle. There will also be covered wagon rides with a lesson on the history of Heflin during the sawmill days.

There will also be tours of the 80 year old Heflin United Methodist Church that was built from wood hand-picked by the Pace brothers, owners of the Pace Sawmill.

The annual Heflin Sawmill Festival Beauty Pageant will be held at the Lakeside School Gym that morning starting at 10 a.m. The new 2015 Miss Heflin Sawmill will receive a $400 scholarship.

Admission to the beauty pageant will be $3. All winners will be present on the karaoke stage later that day.

New to the festival this year will be a chili cook-off. First prize is $100, second $50 and third $25. All are churches, fire and police departments are encouraged to enter. Any and all candidates for office are welcome. There will be no entry fee.

A flea market area will be open to the public for anyone to set up. The Village of Heflin will have Heflin School memorabilia for sale.

At the end of the day, a live concert will be held at the Donnie Nelson Memorial Ball Field. Performing at 6 p.m. will be Granny’s Cadillac, followed by Black Water Bride. Completing the concert will be Louisiana Swamp Donky.  Everyone is welcome to come out, bring your own lawn chairs and enjoy an evening of great musis. Concert is $8 in advance, $10 at the gate.
