High school baseball: Glenbrook knocks off defending state champion Ouachita Christian in select Division IV quarterfinals

The Glenbrook Apaches are headed back to the state tournament.

Glenbrook, the No. 11 seed, knocked off No. 3 seed and defending state champion Ouachita  Christian 4-2 in the quarterfinals of the select Division IV playoffs Wednesday in Monroe.

Glenbrook (15-10) will play the winner of Thursday’s quarterfinal between No. 2 Covenant Christian (27-5) and No. 7 Sacred Heart (19-9) in the semifinals Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Sulphur’s McMurry Park, home of the Ochsner LHSAA Baseball State Tournament.

Glenbrook rallied from a 2-1 deficit with three runs in the top of the seventh.

Preston Frye and Ryan Reagan led off with back-to-back walks. Sam Ricord advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt.

Seth Mangrum and Hudson Glasscock drew back-to-back walks to tie the game at 2.

Jackson Waller then smacked a double to center with two outs, scoring Reagan and Mangrum.

Ouachita Christian put runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the seventh. But first baseman Dawson Day turned an unassisted double play after catching a line drive induced by Easton Sanders.

Sanders turned in his second straight gutsy performance in the playoffs. He pitched another complete game, allowing 10 hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

As they did in the 8-5 second-round victory over St. John, Sanders and the Apaches defense came up big in crucial situations.

The Lions took a 2-1 lead on a one-out double by Tucker Stiutts in the bottom of the sixth. Sanders then induced a lineout and groundout.

He got a strikeout for the third out in the first with runners at first and second. The Lions got a single and double with two outs in the second. But Sanders induced a groundout to end the threat.

In the third, Ouachita Christian  had runners at first and second with no outs. Ssnders stuck out the next batter and the Apaches turned a double play.

In the fourth, the Lions led off with back-to-back singles. After a sacrifice bunt, Sanders got a strikeout and induced a lineout.

After three scoreless innings, Glenbrook took a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Sanders singled with two outs. After Day drew a walk, Frye singled to load the bases. Reagan then brought home courtesy runner Tony Flynn with a single.

Glenbrook had five hits. Sanders went 2-for-3 

Ouachita Christian closed its season 23-7,
