High school boys basketball: Doyline captures seventh straight district title

The Doyline Panthers won their seventh straight District 1-B championship Thursday night with a 55-47 victory over the Quitman Wolverines at Quitman.

The game matched two of Class B’s top teams. According to GeuxPreps.com, Doyline went into the game No. 7 in the power ratings. Quitman was No. 5.

The Panthers improved to 22-3 overall and completed district play 5-1. The Wolverines dropped to 21-9 and 4-2. Doyline swept the district series against Quitman, winning the first game 57-41 on Jan. 30 at Doyline.

Thursday’s game was tied at 36 after three quarters.

Doyline scored the first nine points of the fourth.

Keidric Clark hit a 3-pointer from the baseline. Damarion McLendon converted a three-point play. Cayden Mingo knocked down a 3-pointer to complete the run.

Quitman got within three twice but the Panthers answered both times.

At 45-42, Broox Swain converted converted a three-point play after scoring inside.

A 3-pointer cut the lead to 50-47 with 1:58 to play. But Clark hit a soft jumper inside the lane to push the lead to five with 1:40 left.

The Wolverines didn’t score again.

McLendon and Clark led Doyline with 20 and 18 points, respectively.

Mingo had nine, Swain five and Jay Patterson three.

According to the schedule on the LHSAA website, the Panthers don’t play again until Feb. 16 when they host Georgetown in the regular-season finale.
