The Glenbrook Apaches didn’t come out on top, but they gave the Homer Pelicans all they could handle Friday night at Ronny G. Beard Stadium in Homer.
Glenbrook trailed 24-8 about three minutes left in the first half and 30-16 early in the third quarter.
With 4:42 left in the third, the Apaches got within 30-28 with a chance to tie. But the two-point conversion failed and Homer went on to win the District 1-1A game 38-28.
“It was a game that came down to just a couple of plays,” Glenbrook Head Coach Reagan Smith said. “I am extraordinarily proud of how our players competed.”
Landry Powell scored two rushing touchdowns. Chase Sentell scored one after catching a long pass from Easton Sanders.
Glenbrook’s first TD came on a 1-yard run.
Glenbrook finished the regular season 7-2 overall and 4-2 in district. According to GeauxPreps.com, Glenbrook is No. 10 in the select Division IV power rankings.
The top eight teams in the final rankings receive first-round byes in the playoffs. The next eight host first-round games.
Homer (7-2, 5-0), No. 6 in the non-select Division IV rankings and LSWA Class 1A poll, plays rival Haynesville (8-1, 5-0) for the district title Friday.
Glenbrook opened the game with a good drive that ended with a missed field goal.
Homer took a 16-0 lead on touchdown passes from Zyan Warren to Katreverick Banks and two two-point conversion runs by Warren.
The Apaches got on the board on the 1-yard run and two-point conversion with 2:41 left in the first half.
After Homer answered to go ahead 24-8, Glenbrook scored with just 32 seconds left and trailed 24-16 at the half.
The Pelicans scored their final touchdown and two-point conversion late in the third quarter.
The Apaches reached the Homer 10 with 7:15 left in the fourth but couldn’t get in the end zone.
Calvary Baptist 52, Lakeside 0: At Lakeside, the undefeated Cavaliers proved too much for the Warriors to handle.
Lakeside dropped to 3-6 overall and 0-4 in District 1-1A. The Warriors close the season Friday against Green Oaks in Shreveport. The Giants (2-7, 1-3) lost to D’Arbonne Woods 42-16 Friday night.
Calvary, No. 1 in the select Division III power rankings and LSWA Class 2A poll, improved to 9-0 and 4-0.
