High school football: Minden tops BTW; Heard ties school all-time wins mark

by Russell Hedges

It’s been a tough season for Minden, but the Crimson Tide had at least two reasons to celebrate Friday night.

First, of course, was a victory. An outstanding defensive performance and Dunovan Robinson’s 143 yards rushing propelled the Tide to a 16-8 District 1-4A victory over the Booker T. Washington Lions at Leonard C. Barnes Stadium in Shreveport.

Second, Head Coach Spencer Heard picked up his 63rd victory, tying him with Elton Kelly for first on Minden’s all-time wins list. Heard is now 63-56 in his 11th season.

Minden improved to 2-7 overall and 2-4 in district. Heard can move to the top of the all-time wins list when Minden closes the season Friday against Woodlawn at home.

The Tide held BTW (3-6, 1-5)  to 114 total yards, per stats kept for the KASO/KBEF radio broadcast. The Lions had 110 yards rushing and four passing.

After a scoreless first quarter, BTW took the lead on a 39-yard run by Von’Travious Moore and a two-point conversion with 7:28 left in the half.

Caylien Aubrey’s 2-yard touchdown run capping a 53-yard drive got the Tide within two with 3:37 left in the half. Jakobe Jackson’s two-point conversion run tied it.

Jackson broke the tie on a 3-yard run with 24 seconds left in the third quarter. Jackson again scored the conversion.

The defense kept the Lions at bay in the fourth quarter.

Robinson’s 143 yards cane on 20 carries. He has 483 yards on 91 carries for the season.
