High school football: McGlothan’s big game helps North Webster pound Bastrop

by Russell Hedges

North Webster senior Xavier ‘Tut’ McGlothan has been impressive all season but he took it to another level Friday night.

McGlothan accounted for four touchdowns to lead the Purple Knights past the Bastrop Rams 34-12 in a District 1-3A game at Baucum-Farrar Stadium.

McGlothan is normally a receiver. He played quarterback Friday because starter Christian Wicklund had to sit out after suffering an injury late in the first half last week against Sterlington.

McGlothan threw a long touchdown pass to Kemaurion Jefferson and scored on a long run.

He also plays in the secondary and all he did there was return two interceptions for touchdowns.

The Knights had three defensive touchdowns. Senior end Avante Curry picked up a fumble and returned it for a TD.

North Webster led 19-0 at the half and 32-0 in the fourth quarter. Bastrop (2-7, 1-4) scored a couple of touchdowns against reserves.

North Webster improved to 5-4 overall. The Knights finished district play 3-3 a year after going 1-5.

North Webster closes the regular season against Lafayette Renaissance Charter Academy Friday night at home.

The Knights will be heavy favorites. A victory will give them a 6-4 record a year after finishing 2-8.

North Webster Head Coach John Ware said there was talk of the turnaround after the game.

“To sit here and be in this position,” he said. “And tonight we feel like we secured a home playoff game.

“To go from 2-8 to having a chance next week to have a winning record on the year and that turnaround. It’s just the kids. They didn’t like that last year. They didn’t like that feeling. They turned it around in the offseason. We’ve got a bunch of good kids that sold out.”

The Knights did it with only four seniors who have seen significant playing time.

One of those is McGlothan, who returned to North Webster after transferring to Calvary Baptist.

“Xavier McGlothan moving back here was definitely a big thing for us not only as a player but also as somebody who’s been in the action for a few years and kind of knows what it’s all about,” Ware said. ‘Him coming in helped this young team. We’re still young.”
