The Minden Crimson Tide opened District 1-4A play Friday night with a 51-6 rout of the Woodlawn Knights at Independence Stadium.
Minden evened its overall record at 2-2. Woodlawn dropped to 2-2.
The Tide led 17-6 at the half. While that is relatively close, Minden’s defense definitely had the upper hand and that continued into the second half.
The Tide extended the lead to 24-6 in the third quarter on a 5-yard run by Caylien Aubrey and then scored four touchdowns in the fourth, including a 45-yard interception return by Javen Calloway.
“We were playing well (in the first half),” Minden Head Coach Spencer Heard said. “The second half everything kind of started firing on all cylinders.
“Across the board I thought the defense played really well. We got some turnovers, scored off an interception.”
Minden rolled up 301 yards rushing on just 39 attempts, an average of 7.7 yards per carry, per stats kept for the KBEF-FM broadcast.
“The run game really got going,” Heard said. “That was a big part of it. We still threw the ball, took some shots, stuff like that. The run game really started taking hold.”
Kaiden Shine had 101 yards on just eight carries. He started the fourth-quarter barrage with a 32-yard touchdown run.
Aubrey had 90 yards on 11 carries. He scored the Tide’s first TD on a 10-yard pass from Hudson Brown.
Lucas Owens Jr. added 59 yards on 10 carries. Jardon Carey and Ian Clark scored the final two touchdowns of the game on runs of 14 and 16 yards, respectively.
Braxton Glover kicked a 29-yard field goal with five seconds left in the first half and made six-of-seven extra-point kicks.
“The kicking game was good,” Heard said. “Braxton Glover had multiple kicks into the end zone. That’s always a big thing. He’s fairly consistent on his extra points and field goals.”
Minden travels to Shreveport Friday for a big District 1-4A game against Loyola College Prep at Messmer Stadium. The Flyers (4-0, 1-0) routed Southwood 56-0 Thursday night.
