High school girls basketball: Late Minden comeback falls just short in battle for district lead

A furious comeback by the Minden Lady Tiders fell just short against Northwood in a battle for the District 1-4A lead Tuesday night at Minden.

The Lady Falcons clinched at least a share of the district championship with a 53-52 victory.

Minden sure made them work for it.

The Lady Tiders trailed by 14 with six minutes left. Northwood’s lead was still 10 with about two minutes to play.

Minden cut the lead to 52-44. The Lady Falcons made a free throw to go up by nine with 1:35 left.

A 3-pointer got the Lady Tiders within 53-47 with 1:23 left. A putback with just under a minute to go made it a four-point game.

Minden got a steal with 19 seconds left. The Lady Tiders looked for a good shot but couldn’t find one. With 4.8 seconds left, the Lady Falcons forced a tie ball. Minden retained possession. Brooklyn Jefferson made a 3-pointer with less than a second left and time ran out.

Minden dropped to 13-12 overall and 5-1 in district. The Lady Tiders close the regular season Friday at Southwood. Northwood improved to 17-9 and 6-0. The Lady Falcons host Loyola in their regular-season finale.

Jefferson is finishing a great regular season strong. She had 25 points and 20 rebounds along with six steals, six assists and two blocks.

Travesti Byrd and Shelby Glenn scored 11 each. Byrd also had eight rebounds five assists and five steals. Glenn had five steals, five rebounds and four assists.

In a non-district game, North Webster fell to Providence Classical Academy 45-42 in Bossier City.

The Lady Knights close the regular season Thursday. According to GeauxPreps.com, North Webster is No. 19 in the non-select Division III power rankings and will be on the road in the first round of the playoffs.
