High school softball: Lakeside comes up just short in quarterfinals

by Russell Hedges

The Lakeside Lady Warriors came up just short in their bid for a berth in the state tournament Thursday.

Lakeside, the No. 3 seed, fell to No. 11 Grand Lake 3-1 in the quarterfinals of the non-select Division IV playoffs at Lakeside.

It’s the second straight year Lakeside has lost by two runs in the playoffs.

The Lady Warriors got a stellar performance from 8th-grader Ella Wood in the circle. She allowed just two hits, struck out nine and walked only two in 6 2/3 innings. Grand Lake pitcher Alaina Bearb was also outstanding. She allowed four hits with one strikeout and two walks.

The Lady Hornets scored all three runs in the top of the fourth. All three were unearned. The last two came on a two-out single by Hailee Thevis.

The Lady Warriors cut the lead to two with a run in the fifth. Raleah Harris singled with two outs and scored on a double by junior Emily Jones.

Lakeside got runners on base in the first, second, fourth, fifth and seventh but was able to take advantage only in the fifth.

Jones went 2-for-3. Rhea Waller had a single.

Lakeside finished another very good season 22-10. Grand Lake improved to 19-7.

The Lady Warriors’ loss leaves Glenbrook as the only parish team left in the playoffs.

The No. 2 seed Lady Apaches (23-6) will seek a spot in the state tournament when they face No. 7 Holy Savior Menard (18-12) in the quarterfinals of the select Division IV playoffs Saturday at 1.
