Medication errors can be dangerous and costly for senior adults. Medication errors are a major issue facing today’s seniors. There are several things to consider concerning these errors which can be avoided.

The National Coordinating Council for Medication Error Reporting and Prevention “defines a medication error as “any preventable event that may cause or lead to inappropriate medication use or patient harm while the medication is in the control of the healthcare professional, patient, or consumer” (fda.gov)

Here are some tips to help you avoid medication errors:

Keep an updated list of all your medications: This includes prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements. Share this list with your healthcare provider at every visit 2.

Understand your medications: Know the names of your medications, what they are used for, how to take them, and what side effects to look out for. If you have any questions or concerns, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist 2.

Read the label: Always read the label on your medication before taking it. Make sure it is the right medication, the right dose, and that you understand how to take it 3.

Use one pharmacy: Fill all your prescriptions at one pharmacy so that your pharmacist can keep track of all your medications and check for any potential interactions 2.

Be aware of potential drug interactions: Certain medications can interact with each other and cause harmful side effects. Make sure your healthcare provider knows about all the medications you are taking 3.

Follow instructions carefully:

Take your medication exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not skip doses or stop taking your medication without consulting your healthcare provider first 3.

Report any side effects: If you experience any side effects from your medication, report them to your healthcare provider or pharmacist immediately 2.
