Karen’s Korner,
Our last hints, (Part Two) dealt with our environment and how to keep our homes cool and comfortable as possible for these upcoming days of heat and humidity. Now, we want to concentrate on our physical needs to beat this heat.
The CDC suggests the following:
- Stay in an air-conditioned indoor location as much as you can.
- Use fans to circulate the air – do not put directly on you because the circulating air might aggravate allergies, dry out your skin and eyes, and cause muscle cramps; however, the circulation will cause you to be cooler, especially at night.
- Drink plenty of fluids even if you don’t feel thirsty. Don’t wait until you get thirsty…stay hydrated! Drink plenty of water!
- Schedule outdoor activities carefully. – Move indoors when possible.
- Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing and sunscreen. Wear a hat outdoors.
- Pace yourself. (Heat stroke can cause death.)
- Take cool showers or baths to cool down. A spray bottle close by will help.
- Check on a friend or neighbor and have someone do the same for you.
- Check the local news for weather, health, and safety updates. Be alert!
