KAREN’S KORNER,
As we grow older, there can be many accidents that occur in our homes. Many of those result from things that can be avoided. Here are some helpful tips to safety-proof your home:
Display emergency numbers and your home address near all phones.
Install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in or near kitchens and sleeping areas.
Install alarms that notify you when a door or window is opened.
Use nightlights in halls, near exits, and in the bathrooms.
Make sure all hallways, stairs, and paths are well lit and clear of objects such as books, boxes, or shoes. Keep all areas where people walk free of furniture.
Use rails and banisters when going up and down the stairs. If necessary, mark the edges of steps with bright or reflective tape.
Never place scatter rugs at the bottom or top of stairs.
Rug Tape all area rugs to the floor so they do not move when you walk on them, especially on hardwood floors.
Be aware of medication side effects, and take medications in well-lighted rooms.
Avoid use of extension cords, if possible, place lamps and appliances near electrical outlets, or tack cords to the baseboards to avoid tripping.
Throw out clutter, like newspapers, magazines, old mail, etc.
This list was compiled from several sources to promote safety in the home. For further suggestions or questions, contact the Webster Parish Council on Aging, at 318-371-3056. Have a safe and enjoyable day.
