Karen’s Korner: Summer prep

by Minden Press-Herald

Karen’s Korner

I hope everyone is having a great spring, because before you know it, we will be in the grip of summer. All this cool weather will disappear, and those hot sweltering summer days will be upon us.

The Farmer’s Almanac said that it will be “an early summer for 2024.”

“Summer 2024 could be hot, stormy and moist across much of the country, according to early forecasts. They go on to say that it could be one of the hottest on record in many parts of the country.”

Summer starts officially on June 20, 2024, with the summer solstice! So, we have a ways to go yet, but it’s always good to be prepared.

  1. Check air-conditioning units, fans, refrigerators, and freezers to see that   they are in good working order.
  2. Stock up on sunscreen if you are going to be outdoors.
  3. Get plenty of rest and stay hydrated.
  4. Keep your bedroom cool at night.
  5. Wear loose, lightweight clothing.
  6. Avoid high-energy activities during the day.
  7. Learn about safe food and medicine storage during hot weather.
  8. Make plans to keep in contact with family and friends during hot weather.
  9. Know the areas you may go to get relief from the heat if needed, or in case of power outages.

These are just some things to think about to prepare for summer. Hope you find them helpful. You could always come to the Webster Parish Council on Aging. We have bingo every day, Monday through Friday, Special events, Line Dance classes on Tuesdays at 11:15, Crafts class on Wednesdays at 11:15, Karaoke the second and fourth Fridays at 10:30, Senior Aerobics at 8:30, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, to name just a few of the activities. And they are cool, and that’s what I want to be for the summer, “cool!’

See you there, 1482 Sheppard Street, here in Minden. (C.O.A.)
