Karen’s Korner,

Some Things to Think About:

Did you know that our senior adult’s “life expectancy has increased, with the average reaching around 72.6 years in 2019, and the number of people over 65 is projected to rise from 900 million to 2 billion by 2050, representing 22% of the world population.” (Seniorly Resource Center)

In the U.S., older adults are the fastest-growing age group, and by 2040, the population of seniors over 85 is expected to triple from 5.7 million to 14.1 million.  (Hyperlink)

Did you know that Cataracts in the eyes, which is most common in older people, is the foremost cause of blindness worldwide, due to lack of proper vision care for the senior population. (Hyperlink)

Studies argue that only 30% of the characteristics associated with aging are controlled by genetics. The remaining 70% is controlled by chosen lifestyle factors.  (Seniorly Resource Center)

We are never too old to learn something new! In response to learning, senior citizens can grow new neurons over time which can help fight-off dementia. (Seniorly Resource Center)

Volunteering Keeps Us Young: Many seniors stay active and engaged by volunteering. In the U.S., about 25% of people aged 65 and older volunteer regularly. (Facts.Net- Facts About Seniors)

Travel Trends: Seniors are avid travelers, with many taking multiple trips per year. Popular destinations include Europe, the Caribbean, and national parks. (Facts.Net – Facts About Seniors)

More, and more, information can be found to enhance senior adult lives. The more we know, the better, and the more we can take advantage of the educational facts and statistics that are available to us. We just need to “Stay In The Know!”

Have a great week!
