by Minden Press-Herald

LAFAYETTE, La. – Louisiana Tech senior right-handed pitcher Matt Miller was selected as the Louisiana Sports Writer Association (LSWA) Baseball Pitcher of the week, the organization announced Wednesday.

Miller, usually Tech’s Friday night ace, made a midweek start, pitching one scheduled inning against Mississippi Valley State, and struck out the side on 16 pitches. Then on Friday, Miller resumed his normal Friday night duties in C-USA play with the best start from a Tech pitcher this season. Miller pitched 8.0 innings, while allowing just one run on four hits. The Tech captain struck out seven and walked none, while helping Tech pick up its first league win en route to its first league series triumph. For the week, Miller posted an ERA of 1.00 across 9.0 innings pitched, while striking out 10 and not walking a batter.

For the season, Miller leads the Bulldogs in innings pitched with 30.0, and has also racked up a team-high 34 strikeouts. Opponents are hitting just .243 off the senior, while Tech is 4-2 in his six starts.

Miller was chosen along with UL-Lafayette shortstop, Hayden Cantrelle for the LSWA’s first weekly awards of the season. The duo was among a group of players nominated by their respective baseball sports information directors and selected by a panel of statewide media members. The award is Miller’s second in his career.
