SPRINGHILL – A pair of freshmen teamed up to provide North Webster an improbably victory in round one of the Class 3A playoffs.
Freshman Madeline Farley hit a walk-off sacrifice fly to score fellow freshman Tiffani Winkler from third, giving the Lady Knights a wild 6-5 win.
“We gave them three runs off mistakes,” head coach Alyssa Ford said. “But we never gave up.”
Things looked bleak North Webster trailed 5-2 in the fifth inning.
The Lady Knights never flinched, scoring two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to send the game to extra innings where they prevailed.
“I never had any doubt we would come back,” Ford said. “We made some great defensive plays to get the momentum in our favor. Something has happened this last week, I don’t know what it is, but these girls are fearless and I think we’re going to do really well going down to Jena next week.”
The Lady Knights will face the No. 3 seed Jena Lady Giants, who won their opening round game 15-0 over Booker T. Washington.
