Minden City Council discusses property transfer, airport improvements at monthly meeting

by Will Phillips

The Minden City Council convened Monday evening for its regular monthly City Council meeting, which beforehand included a workshop discussion on a potential property transfer to the Webster Parish School Board, two unanimous votes on airport improvement projects, and a special recognition for a city employee’s professional achievement.

One of the topics that was discussed in the workshop was that of an intergovernmental transfer with the Webster Parish School Board. Essentially, there is a facility located where the school board wants to do some of their baseball field renovations.

“That building is one of the huts at the fairgrounds. Y’all know that those huts are not being maintained at all, some of them are more poorly maintained than others,” said Mayor Nick Cox.

“The Webster Parish School Board has redone the softball fields. We did a property transfer with them, I believe it was in 2024, for Griffith and the water plant. Well, this hut is sitting right in the corner of what they want to redo for the baseball fields.”

It is currently the City of Minden’s property, but seeing as the school board has an interest in revitalizing the facility, the mayor believes the council should consider handing it over to them.

“What I would like to see us do after visiting with them is what Niel referred to as an inter-governmental transfer, where we just give it to the school board and let them do whatever they want to with it,” said Mayor Cox.

“You see how tiny the building is, it’s right there on the corner of where they want to build that ballfield. They want to make the facility look nice. I think it’s to our benefit to make the facility look nice.”

The city council meeting itself was a brief affair with only a few items of city business needing to be voted on. Two of those had to do with the Minden Airport.

This resolution is for an agreement with the State of Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development for funding to construct box hangars for the airport.

The second item related to the airport was that of granting authority to advertise for bids for phase one of a project for perimeter fencing at the airport.

“The airport manager has let us know that she has an opportunity for federal grant funding and has put this forward for your approval,” said Mayor Cox. Both of these agenda items relating to the airport passed unanimously.

Mayor Cox took some time at the end of the meeting, asking the City Clerk Melaney Slack, to stand as he gave her recognition and congratulations for the completion of her three-year curriculum to become a certified Municipal Clerk.

“Now, not only can she do the job, she’s a certified Municipal Clerk, and that process takes three years of hard work and dedication. I’m very proud of you, Melanie. Congratulations on that,” said Nick Cox.

Minden City Council meetings are held on the first Monday of each month at 6 PM at the Minden Civic Center. Meetings are open to the public and, for those who cannot attend in person, are also livestreamed on the City of Minden’s Facebook page and YouTube channel, both titled “City of Minden.”
