A new one-time scholarship established at the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center in memory of late Shreveport attorney James Madison will cover the complete cost of one LSU Law student’s law school journey.
The James R. Madison Memorial Scholarship will support one LSU Law student from Bossier, Caddo, DeSoto, or Webster parishes with upwards of $25,000 in tuition and fees annually for three years.

All accepted first-year law students from the four northwest Louisiana parishes will be considered for the scholarship. Priority consideration will be given to eligible students who submit their applications by March 1, 2026. Learn more about LSU Law admissions.
The scholarship was established with the hope that the benefiting student will return to northwest Louisiana to practice law following their graduation from LSU Law, just as Madison did. Around 6% of LSU Law alumni currently practice law in the Shreveport area.
After graduating from LSU Law in 1974, Madison clerked for U.S. District Judge Ben C. Dawkins (’34). In 1975, he joined Wiener, Weiss & Madison, where he practiced for his entire professional career. When he wasn’t at the office, Madison generously donated his time to the Southfield School in Shreveport, Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, and Community Renewal service organization.
“I never had the pleasure of meeting Jim Madison, but a few weeks ago, it was my privilege to announce this scholarship to a group of our alumni, many of whom knew him, and we are all proud to honor him,” said LSU Law Interim Dean Caprice Roberts.
