State, local races to be decided Saturday

Early voting for the December ballot has concluded and Webster Parish voters will see polls open again Saturday, Dec. 10. from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. with run-off seats to fill and taxes to approve.

Louisiana’s U.S. Senate race will be decided in a runoff between Republican State Treasurer John Kennedy and Democratic Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell.

At the district level, Republican State Rep. Mike Johnson and Democrat Marshall Jones are in a runoff election for the 4th U.S. Congressional District seat formerly held by Rep. John Fleming, R-Minden.

Jones received 27 percent of the vote, while Johnson received 25 percent in the November primary.

The Town of Cotton Valley will decide on the position of mayor with the three candidates in November each having won nearly a third of the vote.

Joseph Alexander received 140 votes or 36 percent and incumbent Comerdis Phillips garnered 132 votes or 34 percent.

In the Dixie Inn aldermen’s race, three aldermen have been elected. Two will head to a runoff, incumbent Connie E. Woods and Nell Finley. Each received 38 votes.

Millages assessed on property in districts throughout the parish are up for renewal including Road District “A” – 2.65 Mill, Road District B – 3.92 Mill , Heflin Fire Protection District – 16.56 Mill, Fire Protection District No. 3 – 15.46 Mill. Each of the proposed tax renewals would last for 10 years.
