Students honored for perfect LEAP scores at Webster Parish School Board meeting

by Amber McDown

Two Webster Parish students were recognized on September 8 for earning perfect scores on the state’s LEAP exams, an achievement that places them among the top academic performers in Louisiana.

Fourth-grader Easton Jeter, a student at Doyline High School, earned a perfect score on the third-grade mathematics LEAP exam. Easton, who was featured recently on Channel 12 News, has overcome challenges linked to oculocutaneous albinism, including delayed speech and limited vision, to excel academically. When told he would be recognized at the meeting and would meet Superintendent Rowland, Easton quipped, “Maybe even President Trump will be there too.”

Ninth-grader Levi Arender, a student at Lakeside Junior/Senior High School, was honored for achieving a perfect score on the eighth-grade social studies LEAP exam. Levi has persevered through serious childhood health challenges, including surviving meningitis at nine days old. In addition to his academic excellence, he is active on the football and track teams and is a member of the National Honor Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Perfect scores on the LEAP are quite rare. Across Louisiana, only about one in three students score at the “Mastery” level or higher in any given subject. The state does not publish data on how many students reach the very top “Advanced” level, but education officials note that it is only a small fraction. That means Easton and Levi not only cleared a high bar but reached the very top, a distinction achieved by very few students statewide.
