The City of Minden has announced plans for a seasonal community ice rink in downtown Minden, with a $20,000 grant from Walmart helping launch the project.
The check was presented during a press conference by Minden Walmart’s new manager, Rory Fleury, following an introduction by Sarah Overall, Minden Main Street director and the city’s economic development director.
Rory said the grant was awarded through the Walmart Strategic Initiative Fund, which supports major community initiatives. According to the regional manager, only two stores in the Southeast business unit were approved for similar grants.
“It’s a pretty big deal. Walmart doesn’t give away grants that large that often … I haven’t handed one out in 23 years,” he said.
He gave credit to Overall and Fleury for completing the required steps to secure approval for the funding.
The temporary rink is planned for the front parking lot of the Minden Civic Center and is expected to operate through the Christmas season and into the new year. Overall said the attraction is intended to serve as a centerpiece for downtown activity and a draw for visitors, as well as being designed to foster community pride while supporting local businesses and organizations.
“Walmart has already committed $20,000 to get the initiative going, so we are looking for other corporate sponsors to help fund the rest of the project,” she said, adding that the rink is intended to become a recurring seasonal feature rather than a one-time event.
City officials said the rink will use synthetic ice, allowing for easier maintenance and storage. In addition to public skating, the rink will include opportunities for hockey and provide equipment for young skaters learning to ice skate.
“It will have opportunities for hockey and all of the equipment for young skaters to learn how to ice skate,” said Overall. “I think it will be a great addition to our district. It’s going to help set the tone for that whole Hallmark Christmas feel. And it will also have the opportunity for other community groups to fundraise.”
Skating fees will be kept low-cost to maintain affordability, according to the city. Management opportunities will be offered to local school programs, churches, and nonprofit organizations, which may apply to operate the rink for a weekend during the season as a fundraising opportunity.
City officials said additional partnership opportunities include sponsorship recognition and branding, on-site promotional opportunities, increased community visibility and support of economic growth in downtown Minden.
The city is seeking additional corporate partners to help fund the remainder of the project. Businesses or organizations interested in sponsorship opportunities are encouraged to contact the City of Minden for more information.
