When Devin White announced he would be attending LSU and enrolling early, speculation began immediately about what position the physical, freak athlete would play for Les Miles and the Tigers.
Flash forward 87 days and White has already found himself working with LSU’s starting defense at middle linebacker.
It’s a move White hinted at the day of his signing, saying he would gladly make a switch to defense if the coaching staff sent him to the defensive meeting room on day one.
That’s exactly what happened, and coach Miles and new arrival at defensive coordinator, Dave Aranda, have rave reviews so far for the 6-foot, 255-pounder from Sprinhill’s North Webster High School.
The praise only intensified after White led the Tigers in tackles during the team’s first scrimmage of 2016.
“He has a natural instinct. He gets up in it. Pretty special,” Miles told The Advocate’s Ross Dellenger. “He’s going to be an every-down player very quickly.”
Earlier this week, Aranda chimed in his thoughts on White’s progress and feel at the linebacker spot.
“Great instincts,” Aranda told The Advocate. “Physical presence there. He’s got the ability to decipher plays. I think there’s a feel you want those guys to have, inside guys, and he has it. He’s got a hunger to learn. He wants to get better. It’s an honor for me to coach him.”
White must continue improving if he wants to keep the starting spot, but it’s clear the coaching staff in Baton Rouge likes what they’ve seen so far.
White will battle it out the rest of spring and again in the fall with Donnie Alexander, a junior out of Edna Karr in New Orleans. One of the two will start alongside Senior Kendell Beckwith who is likely out until fall camp with a knee injury suffered three weeks ago.
The first chance to watch White in action for the Tigers will be the 2016 National L-Club Spring Game in Tiger Stadium, April 16, at 3 p.m.

Devin has nothing but whine since being moved to defense and that’s a fact. He doesn’t want to hear it but linebacker is his best position. Regardless Bielema promised him a spot in his backfield if he would’ve been a HOG but no he thought he was good enough to compete with Fournette and Guice. I bet money he transfers to Nichols before it’s all said and done.
