Young entrepreneur finds success with beaded creations

by Amber McDown

At just nine years old, Paisley McKay is proving that age is no barrier to entrepreneurial success. Through her business, Perfectly Paisley, the fourth-grader at Doyline High School crafts unique beaded items, including pens, bookmarks, makeup brushes, and more. Proudly kid-owned and operated, Paisley’s venture reflects her creativity and drive.

Paisley’s entrepreneurial journey began with Girl Scout cookie sales for Troop 486 in Haughton. As one of the state’s top sellers, she discovered her passion for sales but wanted to create a business where she could directly earn her profits. After receiving a beading kit for Christmas in 2023, she began making gifts for family and friends before turning her hobby into a business in January 2024.

“I came upon beaded work, but it wasn’t on pens, and I got the really good idea of beading on pens,” Paisley said.

Business has been brisk, allowing her to invest in a laser cutting machine to expand her offerings to include custom wooden décor. Her products are available pre-made or personalized to customer requests.

“When people visit my business, I want to make something that makes them happy. If they look at their item and smile, then I’ve done a good job,” she said.

Paisley’s father, a longtime business owner, offers guidance, but her family ensures the business is driven by her decisions and effort. Customers are often surprised to learn she is the one running the operation.

Her achievements have garnered attention, including an invitation to teach an entrepreneurship class for LSU Continuing Education next summer.

In addition to her business pursuits, Paisley competes in national pageants, which she describes as a fun hobby. Currently, she is saving earnings for her next pageant gown.

Paisley’s creations can be found at local farmers markets in Bossier, the Barksdale Market on Sundays, and recent events like the NLTCC Fall Market in Minden. Upcoming appearances include the East Bank Holiday Market in Bossier on December 7 and Shop Till You Drop at the Bossier Civic Center on December 14. Purchases can also be made through her Facebook page, PerfectlyPaisleyAnn.

Looking ahead, Paisley aspires to become a respiratory therapist, inspired by her mother’s work helping others breathe.

“I’m not sure what I’m going to do next, but I know that whatever I decide … it’ll be Perfectly Paisley!”
