Middle school students in Webster Parish and across the country are being invited to take part in the 2026 National Civics Bee, a nationwide competition designed to strengthen civics knowledge and encourage students to become active, informed citizens.
The competition is open to students in grades six through eight. Applications are open now through February 3, 2026, at 11:59 PM (HST).
Students begin the process by submitting a four-paragraph essay describing an idea to improve their community and connecting that idea to the values that shaped the United States. Students can start their online application early and continue editing it until the deadline. An Essay Application Guide is available to help students prepare their submissions.
Top essay finalists advance to a live regional quiz competition in their home state. The Greater Minden Chamber will host a regional competition in Minden. The winner of that competition will advance to the state competition in June 2026, and each state winner will earn a paid trip to compete in the National Championship.
Participants will develop skills in civics, writing and public speaking while learning how to engage respectfully, think critically and explore ways to improve their communities.
Winners at various levels of the competition receive cash awards, trophies and national recognition. The National Champion will earn a $100,000 education savings plan contribution.
