Homegoing Services for O. D. Frazier will be held Saturday, January 6, 12:00 p.m. at the Mayflower Baptist Church. Interment will follow at the Mayflower B.C. Cemetery.
O. D. Frazier was born April 6, 1931, in Claiborne Parish. He grew up in Athens community. He was often asked what the initials O.D. stood for. Despite his many clever responses, O.D. was his given name. He was the second son born to Matthew (Topnotch) Frazier and Rosie Adams Harrison Frazier. He had an older brother Troy and younger brothers were Lester B, Matthew and Robert George. Rosie had two other sons from a previous marriage, Walter Lee & Roy Harrison.
O. D. received Christ at an early age and united with the Mayflower B. C. He was active in the church as a deacon until his health failed. He served in this capacity for more than 55 years. He also served as Sunday School Superintendent, Church Financial Committee, and facility maintenance. He served as the 13th District Association Sunday School Superintendent and any other duties that were required. In his younger years, he sang with a male quartet often performing on the Sunday morning radio gospel hour and traveled around to area churches singing solos.
Two of his favorite songs were “Walk With Me Lord” & “This May Be My Last Time”.
O.D. Frazier was an Army veteran and served in the Korean War. He was employed by Dunham Manufacturing Company for many years where he was a foreman, painter and automobile electrician. Later, he became self-employed, operating his own paint & body shop.
He was very active in social change. He was an early civil rights pioneer serving as a member of the Deacons for Defense. He partnered with Mr. Glennis Oliver to be the first black owners of the Cozy Theater in Minden. He was also a member of the Minden Temple Grand Masonic Lodge. One of his recreational hobbies was playing dominos.
O. D. was united in marriage to Odessa Frazier on August 17, 1953. To this union, five children were born. His memory will be forever cherished by his sons; Rodell (Dione) Flower Mound, TX; Freddy (Margret) Arlington, TX; Jerry (Coranell) Carriere, MS; daughters: Marristene F. Davis, Minden, LA; Judy F Henderson (Ronald) Shreveport, La; grandchildren: Coy Stephenson, Ronald Henderson, Jr, Ashley Morgan (Timothy), Candice James (Roderick), Wesley Henderson, Wendy Burton (Kevin), Chuntavia Frazier, Jamilya Frazier, Rodell Frazier, Jr., Jaelon Davis, Avis Frazier and Jurnee Frazier; eight Great grandchildren , four sisters-in-law: Mattie, Nora, Cassandra Frazier and Adell Johnson; brother-in-law, Mack Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives & friends.
Visitation will be held Friday, January 5th in the chapel of Kennon’s Mortuary from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM with Family Hour from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Services are entrusted to Kennon’s Mortuary. Email condolences may be sent to [email protected].
