Junior Service League event raises nearly $5k for Webster Humane Association
The Junior Service League of Minden held their annual 5k run Saturday Morning, and this year’s went “to the dogs.” Each year the JSL chooses a group to help benefit and this year the Webster Humane Association was the organization they chose.
This being the case, the name for this year’s run was the Dog Day of Summer. The event raised a total of approximately $4800 for the Webster Humane Association.
“We have worked hand-in-hand with the Webster Humane Association to make this event as successful as it is, and we could not have done it without them, the runners, sponsors, the donors, and the volunteers,” said race chairman Alisha Meeker.
This year’s 5k was a well-attended event, with 65 runners signing up and at least 20 pups alongside them. “It’s always a pretty good turnout, but this year it exceeded our expectations,” said Meeker.
The event kicked off with a Puppy Fun, which was a more casual run where those who weren’t interested in the full 5k could enjoy a shorter run alongside all the dogs that came out to the event. Soon after that, the 5k started and lasted roughly two hours, though the winners finished with plenty of time to spare.
The fifth-place winner was Jonette Anderson who finished with a time of 28 minutes and 15 seconds, the fourth-place winner was Scotty Greer who finished with a time of 27 minutes and 54 seconds, the third-place winner was Don Brown who finished with a time of 27 minutes and 13 seconds, the second-place winner was Stephanie Humphrey who finished with a time of 27 minutes and 5 seconds, and first place was Jason Pigg who finished with a time of 26 minutes and 29 seconds, with a pace of about a mile every 8 minutes and 31 seconds.
“This was a very overwhelming and emotional event, in a good way. The lady I originally started talking to on the board of the Webster Humane Association was Sydney Edwards. In the middle of us planning this event, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor, so it made this 5k a little more personal. She has her whole heart and soul in the Webster Humane Association, the pets, and making sure they find loving homes. So that gave us a little more incentive to make this event what it is. It was amazing to see all the support that came out for it,” said Meeker.
