Webster Parish School Board launches “One District One Book” reading event

by Amber McDown

Webster Parish school district is thrilled to announce the commencement of a special reading initiative, “One District One Book.” In this engaging event, students across several schools will receive a copy of this year’s selected books to read at home with their families and at school. Responding to requests, two books have been chosen this year: “The Water Horse” for reading levels preK through 2nd grade, and “Appleblossom the Possum” for reading levels 3rd through 5th grade.

The kickoff for this literary celebration began on January 8, with different schools hosting daily kickoffs. Festive events include parties for parents and students featuring books, treats, and door prizes. Webster Junior High School, for instance, organized an event centered around the theme of apples, offering a variety of apple treats and decorations. Additionally, parents had the opportunity to collect report cards before their official mailing later in the week. Ms. Smith, expressing gratitude for parental participation, emphasized, “It’s all about promoting literacy, fluency, and parental involvement.”

The power of reading together extends beyond individual households, fostering a community of readers, enhancing parental engagement, and strengthening the home-to-school connection crucial to students’ learning and success.

Webster Parish Schools are enthusiastically embracing the new year by reinforcing parent and school engagement through the promotion of reading and literacy. Reading, as a shared activity, not only promotes togetherness but also contributes to the accumulation of knowledge and understanding.

The overarching goal of the initiative is to build a Community of Readers within the schools, encouraging everyone to delve into the world of books, as “Reading Equals Adventures.” The Webster Parish School Board is confident that this literary endeavor will create a positive impact on the community and instill a lifelong love for reading among students and their families.
