BPCC’S NURSING & ALLIED HEALTH DIVISION TO DEMONSTRATE NEW PATIENT SIMULATOR

by Minden Press-Herald

Bossier Parish Community College’s Division of Nursing and Allied Health will offer a live demonstration of its new and most advanced patient simulator to the media Tuesday, July 25, at 9am in the division’s state-of-the-art simulation lab.

HAL S5301 is the new standard in patient simulation, offering immersive training opportunities. From emergency care to ICU and med-surg training, HAL S5301 is designed to fulfill educational objectives across clinical disciplines and blur the lines between simulation and real life.

BPCC is the only institution in the state of Louisiana to currently have the S5301 simulator. HAL will be located in BPCC’s simulation lab, which services the College’s RN, LPN, OTA, Paramedic, PTA and respiratory therapy students as well as nursing students from LSU-Shreveport and PT students from LSU Health Sciences Center.

HAL is built with an artificial intelligence component, which allows him to interact with the students like an actual human. Specific features include:

  • Conversational Speech – automatically answers medical history and initial assessment related questions and follows voice commands
  • Active Motor Function – right arm motor reflex: shake hand, squeeze hand, raise arm, withdrawal response, and abnormal posturing. Head and eyes turn toward the provider speaking
  • Abnormal Eye Movements – Consensual and nonconsensual pupillary response to light stimuli. Abnormal eye movements include strabismus, ptosis, and more
  • Dynamic Facial Expressions – Lifelike facial droop and smiling, pained, quizzical, and scared facial expressions. Dynamic emotional states automatically express non-verbal cues including worry, anxiety, and lethargy
  • Lifelike Sensory Response – Active pain response to pressure-sensitive sites: bilateral supraorbital notch, trapezius pinch (left shoulder), sternal rub, and right middle finger nailbed

Terrie Bergeron, Associate Professor, said HAL will provide the most lifelike experience for students than ever before.

“BPCC strives to stay ahead of the game in providing the best, most innovative healthcare training and this simulator, along with several other new tools, will help our students seamlessly transfer from the classroom to a professional work environment.”
