Supporters of the Dorcheat Historical Association and Museum gathered Monday, September 14, for the museum’s annual gala, an evening of auctions, food, and fellowship aimed at helping preserve Webster Parish history for future generations.
The gala, the museum’s primary annual fundraiser, helps cover the costs of operating the nonprofit museum and supporting its exhibits, collections, programs, publications, and growing digital resources.
Museum Executive Director Jessica Gorman opened the evening by emphasizing that the museum’s work extends beyond the artifacts and exhibits visitors see inside the building.
“This museum plays an important role in our community,” Gorman said. “This building holds the story of our community, of our people, it gives us a place to connect to our history.”
Gorman noted that the museum also hosts speaker programs and works to make local history accessible beyond its walls through her “Historically Speaking” column, books, social media, Flickr, and the museum’s YouTube channel.
“All of this is made possible by the financial support of the community,” Gorman said. “It is made possible by each and every one of you who chose to show up tonight.”
Proceeds from the gala go directly toward museum operations, including preserving artifacts, photographs, and documents; planning speaker events; publishing books; providing digital access to historical resources; and preparing for future projects.
“This museum would not exist without you,” Gorman told supporters. “Our work would not be possible without you.”
The evening included silent auction items and the museum’s popular dessert auction, with donated cakes and other treats going to bidders throughout the event. Richard “Dr. Feelgood” Campbell and Tracy “TLC Picker” Campbell served as auctioneers.
Perryman Welding sponsored food for the gala, while area businesses and individuals contributed items for the silent auction and desserts for the evening. Others who were unable to attend supported the museum through financial contributions.
Following the gala, Gorman thanked those who attended, donated, volunteered, and otherwise supported the fundraiser.
“You make this museum possible,” Gorman said. “Without your support, we would not be able to do what we do and Webster Parish would not have a place to preserve its history.”
