Fish fry supports scholarships, community projects

by Amber McDown

The Minden Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. – Jabberwock Group #1 hosted a fried catfish fundraiser Friday, February 20, drawing community support on a beautiful day.

The event was held at 810 East Street in Minden, coinciding with the first Friday of Lent. Plates featuring fried catfish fillets, homemade potato salad, baked beans, bread and dessert were sold for $10.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will support the chapter’s annual scholarship drive and other community and public service initiatives, including St. Jude, S.E.E.D.S., Sickle Cell and U.C.A.P.

“This fundraising activity is so important because your generous donations and contributions help to financially support deserving high school graduates from the Minden community and surrounding areas — like Springhill, Homer, Sibley, Gibsland, Arcadia, and Doyline (just to name a few), to attend college,” said Felicia Douglas, chairperson.

Douglas thanked those who contributed to the effort.

“We would like to thank all of those who supported our fundraising efforts this past weekend; and, those who ‘haven’t yet, but will give’ to our Scholarship Fundraiser!

“The ‘Jabberwock’ is a Delta institution; and, the public’s vibrant interest and support in this fundraiser have made it sustainable and successful! This year marks 65 years of the Minden Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., sponsoring the Jabberwock fundraising campaign,” said Douglas.

Scholarships will be awarded to selected recipients and announced during their respective award and recognition programs or ceremonies. Specific dates are to be announced.

The chapter’s Jabberwock campaign will conclude February 28, though contributions will continue to be accepted. Donations may be mailed to Minden Alumnae Chapter, DST, Inc., P.O. Box 449, Minden, LA 71058-0449.

The Jabberwock “Queen,” along with runner-ups, will be officially announced and presented at the chapter’s 65th Annual Jabberwock Program, themed “Jazzy in the Park,” at Webster Junior High School at 4:30 PM March 28. The public is invited to attend.
