High school baseball: Minden holds off Loyola, earns series split; North Webster wins two games

The Minden Crimson Tide defeated Loyola 9-8 in the second of a two-game District 1-4A series Thursday at Loyola.

The Tide and Flyers split the series. Loyola won Game 1 6-2 Tuesday.

Elsewhere, North Webster won two non-district home games. The Knights defeated Dodson 20-0 in two innings then downed Red River 16-6.

At Loyola, Minden trailed 5-2 through 3 1/2 innings then took the lead with six runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Tide extended the lead to 9-5 with one in the fifth.

Loyola rallied with three in the sixth. 

The Flyers had runners at second and third, but Barron Bower induced a groundout to end the inning. After giving up a leadoff single, Landon Brewer sat the Flyers down in order in the seventh, ending the game with a strikeout.

Brewer had three of Minden’s eight hits and two RBI. Jamall Carey had two RBI.

Hudson Brown, Brewer and Jacob Jefferson all singled in the fourth. The Tide also took advantage of three walks and a hit-by-pitch.

Minden (18-7, 2-2) hosts Providence Classical Academy Friday at 6. Loyola dropped to 14-12 and 1-3.

At North Webster, Gerrit Gillentine went 2-for-2 with a double and four RBI in the five-inning game against Red River. Chandler Mckenzie went 2-for-2. Tyler Brown went 2-for-4.

Justin Stewart had a double and three RBI. Landon Lewis and Cayden Bernard had two RBI each. Mckenzie didn’t allow a hit or give up a walk with three strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings of relief.

Colby Dinkins went 3-for-3 with a triple and five RBI in the two-inning game against Dodson. Gillentine went 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI. 

Stewart went 2-for-2 with two RBI. Zach McLain went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Mckenzie went 2-for-3. Stewart didn’t allow a hit, struck out two and walked one.

North Webster (5-12) hosts Logansport Friday at 5. Red River dropped to 8-10. Dodson dropped to 3-8.
