High school football: Glenbrook gives new head coach first win in opener

by Russell Hedges

The Glenbrook Apaches gave Reagan Smith his first victory in his first game as head coach Friday night.

Glenbrook defeated the Cedar Creek Cougars 22-18 in Ruston.

“That’s awesome,” said Smith, who replaced David Feaster. “I feel really great for the players and the staff. It’s just a really rewarding feeling.

“That was a really hard-fought, classic high school football game.”

The game went down to the wire.

With 3:03 left in the game, the Apaches faced a fourth-and-3 at their 30 leading 22-18.

Cedar Creek was out of timeouts, and Smith knew a first down would seal the victory so he decided to go for it.

The gamble paid off as Chase Sentell picked up the first down on a run.

“Chase Sentell, he just came in really clutch at the end,” Smith said. “He played wide receiver most of the night and he played some running back. At the end at running back, he was the difference. He was the guy. Real gutty runs to move the chains and run out the clock.”

Sentell also scored a rushing touchdown in the game.

In his debut as starting quarterback, Easton Sanders threw touchdown passes to Landry Powell and Jackson Waller.

Sanders also completed a pass for a two-point conversion and ran for one. That was obviously key as the Cougars didn’t score a PAT.

The Apaches mixed things up on offense.

“We were as multiple as you can possibly be,” Smith said. “We were everything from goalline formation in the middle of the field to five wide.”

Defensively, Glenbrook came up big when it counted the most.

“I feel like at the end we really found ourselves and gutted out a win,” Smith said. “We took our lumps versus their attack but when it mattered most we showed up.”

Glenbrook hosts Bossier next Friday. The Bearkats opened their season with a 46-38 victory over North Caddo.

Cedar Creek hosts Vidalia.
