I-20 traffic stop leads to drug, resisting charges

by Minden Press-Herald

A Bossier City man faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges following a traffic stop Monday night on Interstate 20, according to a Minden Police Department report.

Officers were conducting a speed enforcement detail at the 47-mile marker around 8:20 PM on February 16 when a white Mercedes-Benz was clocked traveling 84 mph in a 70 mph zone using a LIDAR device. The vehicle was also observed traveling in the left lane with no other traffic present, police said.

During the stop, the driver exited the vehicle and was instructed multiple times to return inside before complying. As officers approached the passenger side, they reported smelling a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The driver was identified through the Louisiana Wallet app as Qylan Miles, 20, of Bossier.

When asked if there was marijuana in the vehicle, Miles indicated there was and handed officers a plastic bag later determined to contain 24.6 grams of marijuana, according to the report. As officers attempted to conduct a pat-down, Miles repeatedly reached into his pocket and resisted commands. Police said he forcibly pulled away, causing a struggle that resulted in minor abrasions to both officers and Miles. The encounter occurred near passing traffic, and officers warned Miles he would be tased if he did not comply. He was eventually placed in handcuffs.

Officers reported recovering a bag Miles attempted to conceal containing 2.9 grams of crack cocaine, two hydrocodone pills and 4.7 grams of marijuana. A probable cause search of the vehicle uncovered additional items, including hydromorphone pills, Furosemide pills, ibuprofen pills in a prescription bottle labeled for another individual, a small black scale and latex gloves. The vehicle was registered to another person, police said.

Pafford EMS provided first aid to Miles and the officers for minor injuries at the police department. Miles was later transported to Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center.

Miles was charged with maximum speed, driving on the right side of the road (exceptions), two counts of resisting an officer with force or violence, possession of Schedule II controlled dangerous substances including hydromorphone and crack cocaine, possession of oxycodone, simple possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and two counts of possession of a legend drug.

All subjects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
