Karen’s Korner,
As Senior Adults, many of us have learned to live alone. Many have lost a spouse, or older family members, brothers or sisters, or those who are close to us. And it is difficult when we are left in a situation where we must live on our own. While some people enjoy the solitude of the living-alone-lifestyle, others crave the company or companionship of others. It just depends on the individual. Living alone can help you find the time to work on your most important relationship — the one you have with yourself. Here are some helpful hints when you are living alone to help possibly fill those living alone hours.
Identify an emergency contact – Family, friend, colleague, neighbor: someone who will be able to be contacted when there is an emergency or if there is an immediate need. Their number or contact information needs to be placed in a location that will be highly visible and convenient to find in case you need someone along with other emergency numbers. (911)
Research the Medical Alert Systems that are available. – Fear of falling or injury is always on our minds as seniors, and the Medical alert systems, often known as personal emergency response systems (PERS) are devices that let users call for medical attention and assistance, 24/7, with the push of a button. They’re particularly useful for older adults or people with medical conditions who live or spend significant time alone. These systems typically consist of a wearable device-for instance, a pendant or wristband with a button and a base unit that’s connected to a landline or cellular network.
Strengthen Your Relationships – Along with soul searching, living alone gives you the chance to examine your relationships and note the ones that don’t do much for your well-being.
Consider a Pet – After all, they provide a purpose and companionship…and a lot of care!
Prioritize Your Wellness – Regular Dr. visits, eat and work on a proper diet, consistent sleep patterns, find a workout buddy, and spend some meditation and spiritual time!
Get Involved in the Community. We would love to have you come to the Webster Parish Council on Aging, plus there are other groups in our community that will also be of interest to you as well…..After all, living alone is not so bad when you think about new opportunities you can try! And besides, breaking out of typical patterns can expand your perspective, help you grow, and connect you with new people.
