The Minden City Council will hold a special session Monday, August 25, at 12:30 PM to consider Police Chief Jared McIver’s recommendation to terminate a police lieutenant and to vote on an emergency budget amendment to repair plumbing at the Minden Civic Center.
The agenda includes McIver’s recommendation to permanently terminate Lt. Jason Smith following an internal investigation into his conduct on or about June 23. According to an inter-office memorandum from McIver, Smith appeared at a pre-termination hearing July 10 and presented his case before a panel. At the conclusion, McIver recommended termination.
Smith remains on paid administrative leave until the council makes a final decision. In accordance with Louisiana Open Meetings Law, the council may enter executive session before taking action on the matter.
Also on the agenda is a resolution to amend the city’s 2024-2025 budget to cover $45,534 in emergency plumbing repairs at the Civic Center. The 55-year-old cast iron sewer lines are in immediate need of replacement, according to city documents. The amendment recognizes a $50,000 transfer from sales tax revenue to cover the repairs.
The project involves removing old cast iron piping, replacing it with PVC lines, reinstalling toilets, and testing the new system.
Meetings are open to the public and are livestreamed on the City of Minden’s Facebook page and YouTube channel under the name “City of Minden.”
