Minden Junior Service League’s annual Coat Drive seeks to address local needs

by Amber McDown

The Minden Junior Service League is actively engaged in its yearly Coat Drive, serving the Webster Parish public school system. This community-driven initiative aims to provide essential winter wear to children in need.

In response to the frequently asked question, “How do you choose who gets a jacket?” the league collaborates with the WPSB staff and counselors who make confidential decisions based on need, ensuring that Minden JSL remains unaware of the recipients’ identities. Only the necessary coat sizes are shared with the league.

As of the latest update, the initiative has identified 152 students in need of coats ranging from 5T to 2XL. So far this year the community has contributed 50 gently-used coats, but the ultimate goal remains to provide for all children in need, a goal largely dependent on community support.

Seven collection bins have been strategically placed throughout the community for coat donations. These bins are located at b1Bank, Minden Montessori of Glenbrook School, First Baptist Minden, First Methodist Minden, Say Grace, All Hours Fitness, and Geaux Fresh. Donations are welcome during regular business hours.

Minden JSL offers a convenient pick-up service for new or gently-used coats from donors’ homes, and interested parties can reach out via email at [email protected] or through Facebook messaging.

Al-N-Way Cleaners is a vital partner in this initiative, offering to dry clean every donated coat. Those wishing to contribute can drop off coats in the drive-thru at Al-N-Way Cleaners, specifying that the donation is for the Minden JSL Coat Drive.

The immediate need at present is for children’s coat sizes, specifically Youth Medium and Youth Large. Those without coats who wish to support the cause can make monetary donations through PayPal at [email protected], Venmo at @Minden-JSL, or by mailing a check to Minden Junior Service League, P.O. Box 722, Minden, LA 71058. Cash donations should be hand-delivered to any league member.

“Our deadline to collect coats is October 31. After that date, our league members get right to work sorting, organizing and will typically distribute the coats the week of Thanksgiving,” said Amanda Abshire, chair of the JSL Coat Drive. “Before the coats are delivered, the league members will come together to say a prayer over the coats and for each child receiving a coat this winter season.”

The Minden Junior Service League’s Coat Drive shows the power of community support in meeting the needs of the youngest members of the community during the colder months.
