Minden REC to receive turf, lighting and playground upgrades

by Amber McDown

The Minden Recreation Complex is undergoing a series of upgrades that city officials say will enhance playing conditions and add new amenities while minimizing disruptions to scheduled events.

Zack Harrison, interim chief of staff for the City of Minden, said all baseball and softball infields at the complex will be converted to turf. Lighting on all quads will be retrofitted with LED fixtures, and both the football and soccer fields will be fully turfed.

“We’re going to go from quad to quad, so no disruption will happen to games or tournaments,” Harrison said. “Once the first one’s done, it can go into use and we’ll move on to the next one.”

Construction has already begun with crews tearing out the first quad. Harrison said the phased approach will allow completed areas to return to use before work begins on the next section.

Additional improvements include installation of a new playground featuring turf surfacing and construction of a pavilion approximately 10 feet tall equipped with multiple picnic tables. Two new batting cages will also be added — one near the first quad at the entrance and another near the existing batting cage.

Harrison said he is looking forward to the finished project.

“I’m very excited,” he said. “It’s going to look really good. I can’t wait to see how it turns out.”

The city is partnering with GeoSurfaces, a TenCate company, on the project. In a press release, company officials said the work will include installation of Pivot Performance Turf across multiple sports fields and play areas, as well as GeoSport Lighting and additional site amenities.

“We are thrilled to partner with the City of Minden on a project that so clearly invests in the future of this community,” said Billy Dawson, Chief Commercial Officer for TenCate South. “With GeoSurfaces, a TenCate company, installing our revolutionary Pivot Performance Turf across multiple sports fields and play areas, as well as delivering high-performance GeoSport Lighting and additional site amenities, we are proud to bring our experience and expertise to a project of this scale. Our team is committed to creating safe, durable, and truly exceptional spaces that families, athletes, and residents can enjoy for years to come.”

City officials have not announced a completion date but said the improvements are designed to provide long-term benefits for local athletes, families and visitors to the recreation complex.
