Karen’s Korner,

I have been spending a good bit of time researching ways to support healthy aging by reading and searching for wellness tips for seniors.

Preventative Care is a proactive approach to healthcare that focuses on preventing illnesses, detecting potential health concerns early, and promoting overall well-being. It goes beyond just treating existing health issues and encompasses a range of strategies to maintain and improve senior health. This includes regular check-ups and screenings to identify health risks before they become serious, staying up-to-date with recommended vaccinations, and adopting healthy lifestyle choices.  (Flagship Health)

I found some interesting statistics on one of the leading causes of fatalities in the United States: Smoking!

The CDC says that “The chemicals and substances as a result of smoking lead to 480,000 deaths a year in the United States alone.”

Smoking contributes to lung and throat cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, COPD, heart disease, and strokes. It ages the skin and also restricts blood flow

“Quitting smoking is one of the most impactful steps to improve your health and longevity, assuring us of a healthier lifestyle. The benefits of quitting begin almost immediately; within hours, your body starts to repair itself, and over time, your risks of smoking-related diseases decrease significantly. (Advice for the Elderly)

“If you would like to quit, there are many resources that are available to help an individual stop smoking, even though it is very difficult at times. There are counseling services, nicotine replacement therapy such as patches, gum, lozenges, prescription medications, and support groups. Organizations like The American Lung Association and SmokeFree.gov. offer free tools and free plans to guide you through the process.” (Advice for the Elderly)

Work with your health professional to help design a specific plan that will enable and lead you to live a healthier, smoke-free life.

Wellness is the way…..especially for seniors like us.
